It pleases me to advise that from the 1 of July 2018, Medibank Private and BUPA will provide rebates for counselling and psychotherapy services. This is a major change that will improve access for clients to mental health services from counsellors and psychotherapists.  For many years therapists trained in psychotherapy have sat apart from the traditional medical model of mental health services. I know… it’s a little odd…

Below is further detailed info in regard to this. Needless to say, I encourage existing and new clients to take advantage of these private health fund rebates for mental health.

Medibank Private

Medibank Private rebates for counselling are available to Medibank Private members with appropriate policies. To make a claim, members must have a policy with the package bonus or membership bonus feature. The following Medibank Private products include package bonuses that can be used for counselling but are no longer available for purchase:

  • PremierPlus;
  • AdvantagePlus;
  • Smartplus; and
  • HealthyPlus

The following Medibank Private products include the “membership bonus” and are currently available:

  • Everyday Comprehensive;
  • Settled Families Essentials;
  • Settled Families Comprehensive; and
  • Security Comprehensive

BUPA

Rebates for counselling services will only be paid for BUPA members who have the appropriate level of Extras cover. These benefits will be a part of Extras products under the heading of ‘Mental Health’. Insurance products with cover for counselling can also be purchased from 1 July by new customers wishing to switch to BUPA.
